For many children, good behavior is something that just comes naturally.They get along well with their parents and follow instructions like they are meant to.
But there are some kids who appear to be difficult to handle when it comes to discipline. Maybe they do not have satisfactory discipline in the home, maybe they have emotional issues due to early lifetime traumas, or perhaps they are just children who have more problems than most.
For these youngsters, behavior contracts could be a lifesaver. As a parent and a teacher, I know firsthand the utility of behavior contracts. I have been using printable behavioral contracts with my scholars and my own offspring for ages. It started when my youngest child turned 8. I do not know what it was, but somehow he started acting out terribly shortly after he had his birthday. He wouldn’t follow rules, retire to bed on time, do his college work, or anything more. I did not actually expect it to work, but I believed I’d give it a go.
I explained to him the guidelines he was predicted to obey. I also explained to him what I’d do if he did not obey the guidelines. We wrote it out and posted it on the wall, together with rewards and punishments, and both signed it. He was attempting to test the boundaries naturally, and began acting up even more than previously. After he noticed that I meant business his behavior started to switch. It took a large amount of work and it did not occur overnite, but it probably did occur. One of the largest and worst mistakes you can make as a parent is to expect behavior contracts to resolve all your issues. Instead, they seem to be a tool that you can use to unravel your own issues.
A behavior contract is essentially a method for a parent or teacher to set down the law in a concrete demeanour. It is up to the authority figure to remain firm on the punishments that have been selected. If you do not, you can make the difficulty worse than it was.
